Dates: 05-07 September 2024
Destination: Dhanauri, Sonkhaliya, and Aravalli Forest
Guide: Mahesh Rajpoot

Trip Report: From September 5th to 7th, 2024, Claus Nielsen and I embarked on a thrilling birding adventure through Dhanauri, Sonkhaliya, and the Aravalli Forest. Our guide, Mahesh, led us through diverse landscapes, ensuring we didn’t miss the region's most fascinating bird species.

Sonkhaliya birdwatching

The highlights of the trip came early with majestic sightings of Sarus cranes at Dhanauri and the elusive Lesser florican at Sonkhaliya, both species being incredibly rewarding to witness. Moving through the scrubland, we caught glimpses of the Bristled grassbird and the charming Red Avadavat. As we ventured deeper into the Aravalli, nocturnal wonders like the Savanna nightjar and Indian nightjar added a touch of mystery to the birding.

Lesser florican

Other notable sightings included the Rock eagle owl, Tricoloured munia, and the melodious Singing bushlark. The Red-headed bunting, White-tailed iora, and the striking Black-headed cuckoo shrike were some of the many colorful surprises that added vibrancy to the trip. For anyone who enjoys scoping out raptors, the agile Red-necked falcon was a definite treat.

Monsoon Birding

Mahesh’s expertise made the trip smooth, informative, and memorable. His sharp eye for detail helped us observe elusive species like the Eurasian wryneck and the vibrant White-bellied minivet.
